Villari’s History

Founding

Villari’s Martial Arts Centers was originally called United Studios of Self Defense, and was founded in 1968 by Frederick J. Villari. His first studio was in Waltham, MA.

Grandmaster Villari envisioned that martial arts should be a practical vehicle for everyone to learn self defense, fitness, and healthy activity.  To that end, he worked tirelessly to change the paradigm of the industry from poorly-lit dojos in church basements or in corners of smelly gyms with questionable instructors to professional, comfortable retail storefronts in safe neighborhoods with well-trained & experienced instructors, separate classes for adults and children, and rates most anyone could afford. Our organization continues to grow across North America as the premier martial arts instruction chain.

We’ve taught generations of Americans – now it’s your turn!

CNY History

We are currently located in Cicero, NY but we’re no strangers to Central New York!

Master Ken Canestraro is originally from CNY. His first studio was located at in Oswego in the 1980s.

Master Ken left CNY to open Villari’s locations across New England and serve as Vice President of the organization. In 2013 he returned home to CNY to bring Villari’s back to his roots, and in 2018 was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame during a very special presentation at Villari’s 50th anniversary gala.
